Contexte et atouts du poste

The objective is to carry out research work on problems of statistical estimation with the support of information theory. This research involves a literature review, mathematical analysis, and numerical simulations, as well as the writing of research papers and their possible presentation at international conferences.

Mission confiée

Missions:
The postdoctoral researcher will join the Scool team for a period of 24 months. They will conduct research on problems of statistical estimation supported by information theory, as described below. This research work involves a literature review, mathematical analysis, and numerical simulations, as well as the writing of research papers and their possible presentation at international conferences.

Scientific summary and references:

At the core of scientific experimental studies lies the question of hypothesis testing: is a new medical treatment better than a placebo? Is a new algorithm more efficient on a computational task than the current state of the art? Due to random fluctuations, experiments must be repeated over several trials (to collect multiple samples) before making a decision.

For these applications, statistical methods for hypothesis testing and estimation are needed, with formal guarantees on their probability of error. These methods should also require as few trials as possible in order to be applicable in domains where collecting samples is time-consuming or costly. To minimize the number of samples, tests should adapt to observations as they are collected.
